Vision, playing style and pioneering use of data analysis in elite football

Football

Robert has lived through multiple experiences as a coach that have required him to experiment with different types of football. While his preference is an associative playing style based on short passing, he is capable of getting the best out of different scenarios and conditions.

As a dedicated student of the game, he is always at the forefront of the predominant styles across different leagues, observing the particular characteristics of each type of football. His time in Italian, French and Spanish football — in the latter across virtually every level — gives him a broad and cross-cutting knowledge base.

The player is at the centre of the game, and so is getting results by extracting the maximum performance from the squads he has worked with. He loves working with young players, having been responsible for various youth teams throughout his career.

«I believe a coach must get the best out of every specific situation. You can’t always choose the players you have, but you can choose the way you make them play. The player and the team come above everything. I’m not in football to win medals for defending a particular style at all costs. That said, if you give me the choice, I want to be protagonists, to dominate the ball, to dominate the game. I want to overwhelm the opposition both offensively and defensively. To create more chances than my opponent and to keep danger away. Knowing that this is the ideal we pursue and that it is not easy.» — Robert Moreno

Technology

Robert began his career as a football professional working as a video analyst at FC Barcelona “B”. He is considered one of the pioneers in his country in the use of technology applied to football.

He has collaborated with LaLiga in the development of the MediaCoach analysis programme, serving as one of the external advisors in the validation and evolution of the platform. He is passionate about data and has introduced technology-driven work at most of the clubs where he has served, both as an assistant and as a head coach.

«The coaching profession requires the application of technology in order to get the most out of everyone. The data now obtained through imagery, Big Data, GPS and other tools is impossible for coaching staffs to absorb on their own… that is why I firmly believe in using these advances… Players need — and increasingly demand — more information. Each of them has individual characteristics that make them unique within the group, and they therefore require individualised treatment in order to reach their peak performance.» — Robert Moreno
